Moldavite is a forest green, olive green or blue-greenish vitreous silica projectile rock formed by a meteorite impact in southern Germany that occurred about 15 million years ago. It is a type of tektite.

What it actually is
Not a crystal. Impact glass.
Here is the distinction almost nobody makes: moldavite is not a crystalline mineral like quartz or amethyst. It has no crystal lattice and it did not grow slowly in a vein. It is natural glass: rock melted by the heat of an impact, thrown into the air, flash-cooled during flight and dropped back to the ground. That is why its shape is irregular and corrugated, full of grooves and pits no mineral produces.
Tektites are gravel-sized bodies composed of black, green, brown or gray natural glass formed from terrestrial debris ejected during meteorite impacts. Several tektite fields exist around the world — australites, indochinites, bediasites, ivorites — but nearly all of them are black or dark brown. Moldavite is the exception: the only tektite green and translucent enough to be cut into jewelry.
That is what makes it singular: it did not fall from the sky, but it was born of the sky. It is the Earth answering a blow that came from space.
Where the name comes from
From the river Moldau — Vltava in Czech — on whose Bohemian banks the first scientifically described specimens were found, in 1787. Hence "moldavite": the stone of the Moldau. In German it is Moldavit; in Czech, vltavín.
Its color, explained
The green runs from deep forest green to pale olive green, and in exceptional pieces toward blue-green. That color comes from iron present in the sand and rock that melted in the impact, not from an added pigment. Held against the light, an authentic moldavite is translucent and full of elongated bubbles and striations: the traces of gas trapped while the glass was flying and cooling.

Everything that is moldavite today was formed in a geological instant. This is the sequence, according to the crater record and to what we hold at MetaYantra.
The material did not travel inside the meteorite: it was terrestrial rock melted by the blow, hurled into the atmosphere and solidified on the way down. That is why moldavite is both earthly and cosmic in origin.

The blow

The melt
The sand and rock of the site — rich in silica — vaporize and melt instantly. No mineral is left: what remains is incandescent liquid.

Flight and cooling
In flight, each droplet flash-cools on contact with the air and becomes green glass. The trapped gas bubbles and the striations from that turbulence are still visible inside every piece today.

The fall
It lands hundreds of kilometers from the crater, in what is now Bohemia and Moravia, in the present-day Czech Republic. That is the strewn field: the only area on the planet where moldavite is found.

The next fifteen million years
The glass stays buried in sediment. Erosion and rivers — the Moldau among them — bring it slowly back to the surface. Every piece that exists today was sculpted by that time: the grooves and hollows are geological corrosion, not human carving.
Real scarcity
Why moldavite is running out.
Moldavite is not rare because of a trend or a manufactured shortage. It is rare by arithmetic: there was one impact, one cloud of molten material and one strewn field on the entire planet. There is no second mine on another continent waiting to open. What exists is what fell fifteen million years ago over a relatively small area of central Europe.
That deposit does not regenerate. Every piece extracted reduces the world total, and the accessible sites have been worked for decades. On top of that, most of the recovered material is small fragments: large, clean, well-colored pieces are a tiny fraction of what is found.
The practical consequence is twofold. First: the price rises and will keep rising, because supply is finite and global demand grew sharply over the last decade.
